Location



Monterey is located on the Central California Coast, 110 miles south of San Francisco, 80 miles southwest of San Jose and 360 miles north of Los Angeles. This beautiful waterfront city is on the north side of the Monterey Peninsula, between the cities of Pacific Grove and Seaside.

Government



Monterey is a Charter City, which operates under a Council Manager form of government. The five-member City Council is supportive of the city's continuing economic growth, and has played an active role in the revitalization of downtown Monterey.

Permit / License / Zoning Information



All prospective new businesses should check with Planning Division at (831) 646-3885 to make sure that the zoning is appropriate for the proposed use. Some businesses must obtain a use permit approved by the Planning Commission. Signage must be reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee for most projects. Business licenses are obtained from the Revenue Office in the Finance Department at City Hall.

Down payment assistance loans for low and moderate first-time homebuyers. Provides for loans of up to 15% of the purchase price (maximum purchase price is $300,000) at 5% simple interest. All payments are deferred for 5 years. Must live or work in City of Monterey or be former 5-year resident.
